Your Next Read — Only Dead on the Inside: A Parent’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse
By: Spencer Hagaman
James Breakwell takes the atypical parenting book and finds a way to make parenting advice bearable and entertaining, making it a definite read not just for parents but for all audiences.
I had the recent privilege to read and review an advanced copy of James Breakwell’s new book Only Dead on the Inside: A Parent’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse set to be released this upcoming October. The new book from the comedian and cartoonist provides tips and guidelines on parenting in a world run by zombies.
My original thought was that this was going to be your usual parenting book: boring. However, I quickly found out the opposite that unlike most books created for parents or expecting parents, Only Dead on the Inside keeps you hooked from cover to cover. The guide is filled with cartoons about parenting and comedic tangents and asides about Breakwell’s own life that make the reader forget they are reading a parenting guide.
Breakwell’s advice, which stems from his experience as a father of four, covers everything a parent would have to worry about in surviving a zombie apocalypse from food to protection. However, these survival tips not only applies to parenting during a global zombie apocalypse that would bring the world and civilization as we know it crumbling down but also to how to raise a family without becoming a zombie yourself (pun intended). Breakwell also predicts that when the zombie apocalypse begins and paper currency becomes worthless, diapers will become the primary source of currency in the post-apocalyptic world due to its limited supply and demand.
While this might just be a scheme to make himself the richest man in a zombie-filled world, who’s to say Breakwell is wrong? The economists are likely to be the first ones dead. While tailored for parents and expecting parents, Only Dead on the Inside: A Parent’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse is a definite read for anyone just looking for a laugh. Not only does it serve entertainment and educational purposes, it can also serve as a weapon in the event of a zombie apocalypse. However, I suggest you get a physical copy of the book if you plan to use it for this purpose. Only Dead on the Inside is set to be released to the public on October 10, 2017.
